When Can a Root Canal Help Save a Tooth?

What Happens During a Root Canal?
1. Dr. Jaime Evaluates the Tooth
First, Dr. Jaime will examine the tooth, review your symptoms, and take X-rays to determine how far the damage or infection has progressed. That information helps her decide whether the tooth can be restored predictably and how to proceed with treatment.
2. We Make Sure You’re Comfortable
Before any treatment begins, Dr. Jaime numbs the tooth and the surrounding tissue with local anesthesia. Many patients are surprised to learn that a root canal is often no more uncomfortable than having a cavity filled.
Once the area is numb, the goal is for you to feel pressure and movement but not pain.
3. Dr. Jaime Removes the Infection From the Tooth
Once the tooth is isolated, Dr. Jaime creates a small opening at the top of the tooth to reach the infected area. Using specialized instruments, she removes the damaged or infected pulp from inside the tooth.
For many patients, this is the most important part of treatment. The infected tissue causing pain, sensitivity, or swelling is removed, allowing the tooth to heal.
4. We Clean and Seal the Tooth
After the infected tissue is removed, Dr. Jaime carefully cleans and disinfects the narrow canals that extend through the tooth’s roots. She then fills and seals those spaces to help prevent bacteria from reentering the tooth in the future. Depending on the tooth and how much structure remains,
Dr. Jaime may recommend a dental crown. A crown covers and strengthens the tooth so you can continue using it comfortably for years to come.
