Symptoms That Signal a Dental Emergency
Severe or Persistent Tooth Pain
Ordinary tooth sensitivity comes and goes. But if the pain sticks around for hours, wakes you up at night, or keeps coming back, it may be more than simple sensitivity.
A cavity, crack, or injury can reach the nerves inside the tooth and cause them to become irritated. Since there is nowhere for the swelling and pressure to go, the pain can become intense very quickly. Pain like this usually will not settle on its own, and a visit to our office can help us find the cause, relieve the pressure, and protect the tooth from further damage.
Swelling in the Face, Jaw, or Around a Tooth
Swelling around a tooth can be confusing because the pain may not always feel severe. You might notice that your cheek, jaw, or gums look puffy or feel warm, sore, or tight. A fever or feeling generally unwell can also point to an infection.
The swelling could be a response to bacteria that have collected around the tooth or in the gums, creating an abscess. Even if the pressure eases for a little while, the infection still needs treatment.
A Permanent Tooth Knocked Out, Shifted, or Suddenly Loose
A permanent tooth that has been knocked out, pushed out of position, or suddenly becomes loose should be evaluated as soon as possible. Time is important: the sooner we can see you, the better the chances of saving the tooth and protecting the bone underneath it.
A hard impact can damage the ligament fibers and bone that hold a tooth in place. If the tooth has come out completely, the living cells on the root start to break down quickly, so getting to us fast really does make a difference.
A Swollen Bump on the Gum or a Persistent Bad Taste
A swollen bump on the gums is often a sign of an abscess.
An abscess happens when bacteria infect the tissue surrounding a tooth. The drainage might ease the pressure for a little while, but the infection won’t clear up on its own. It still needs treatment, and we’d rather see you sooner rather than later.
Is It a Dental Emergency? Why Some Tooth Pain Can Wait
You may not know whether a toothache is serious enough for an emergency visit, and that is okay. If the pain is mild, manageable, and starting to fade, you can usually watch it for a day or two and schedule a regular appointment.
Sensitivity is an issue we see quite a bit. A cold drink, hot food, or sometimes cool air may cause a quick, sharp feeling that goes away once the trigger is gone. That can happen when the protective enamel wears down, or the gums pull back and expose a more sensitive part of the tooth.
